When we held the first World Breast Pumping Day back in January 2017, we hoped to reach as many pumping moms as possible. Our goal was to create a day celebrating pumping moms and their dedication and unparalleled drive to feed their babies. Our dream has grown since then, slowly and steadily reaching more people, and continuing the conversation to normalize pumping and breastmilk feeding.
The third annual World Breast Pumping Day was held on January 27th, 2019. The theme, Together #WeCanPump, acknowledged the villages we draw on for support as pumping moms. Not all of us are raising our children surrounded by extended family like many from past generations did. Our villages might look a little different; maybe they’re smaller, maybe digital instead of “in real life” or maybe they’re just made up a little differently. But our villages are no less important. They are the people who keep us going when we feel frustrated or lost. They’re the people who wash our pump parts when we can’t keep our eyes open for one more minute. They’re the people who give us an encouraging word, who help us research our options, and who never make us feel guilt or shame for the choices we make.
This year we were lucky enough to receive the input of our World Breast Pumping Day Steering Committee — amazing women from all walks of life who gave us their time and their expertise to help guide us. We are so grateful for our WBPD village and the wisdom they shared with us.
As we watched the different posts celebrating World Breast Pumping Day go up on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, we were shocked and humbled to see how far World Breast Pumping Day has expanded in three short years. We celebrated with people in Brazil, Ireland, Estonia, Finland, all across North America, and more. We can’t wait to reach even more people next year, January 27th, 2020, for the fourth annual World Breast Pumping Day. Will you celebrate with us?
